“As modestly as we lived at home, I never felt poor because our lives were so rich with experience.”

In this quote, Noah highlights the value of experiences over material wealth. He grew up in challenging circumstances in apartheid-era South Africa, but his mother, Patricia, provided him with a rich and diverse set of experiences. This reflects the belief that life's richness isn't solely determined by material possessions but by the quality and diversity of the experiences. This understanding of valuing experiences over possessions reflects his identity and culture, shaped by the resourcefulness and resilience of his mother and the vibrant, complex culture of South Africa.

“We tell people to follow their dreams, but you can only dream of what you can imagine, and, depending on where you come from, your imagination can be quite limited.”

This quote illustrates Noah's recognition of the limitations that a person's childhood and surroundings could impose on their dreams and aspirations. His mother expanded his imagination by exposing him to new circumstances, people, and ideas. This shows the belief that thinking beyond a person's regional surroundings and expanding perspectives can have a positive impact. It also emphasizes how important diversity and exposure to various cultures are in forming a person's identity and perspective.

“Because” she would say, “even if he never leaves the ghetto, he will know that the ghetto is not the world. If that is all I accomplish, I’ve done enough.”

Patricia Noah emphasizes the value of cultural awareness and viewpoint by supporting her son as to be exposed to a wider environment and learn that the ghetto is not the world. This belief aligns with Trevor's realization that identity and culture can be limiting if one doesn't have exposure to different perspectives. Patricia highlighted the importance of a larger, more comprehensive identity and a knowledge of culture by instilling in him the belief that there is more to the world than his close surroundings.
